The Brew Crew is proud to announce our latest adventure, A Revolutionary View: Saratoga Battlefield and the breweries of Schuylerville. This day-long adventure includes history, nature, great food, beautiful drives, and, of course, beer.
Backroads to the Battlefield
Schuylerville is located at the easternmost point in Saratoga County which means that highways don’t quite get there. No matter how you head to the Battlefield, a beautiful drive along some country backroads is in store. Passing by farms, driving along the Hudson River, and bopping past beautiful old homes makes you know you are taking a worthwhile road trip on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The Battlefield is a little away from anywhere and the drive puts you in the right mood.
A turning point
Saratoga National Historical Park has held a cultural and historical significance since 1777 when it was the site of two decisive battles between the British and the Americans. The American victory on October 7, 1777, affected the momentum of the Revolution and set the stage for the future.
The site’s Visitor Center welcomes guests with historical displays and a stunning view of the valley below. From this entry point, you can choose your own way of experiencing the Battlefield itself. There is a self-guided audio tour that you can follow along in your car as you drive the tour road, stopping at markers along the way. There are walking trails that traverse the Battlefield, giving you a personal experience with history. Many cyclists enjoy biking on the Tour Road, though it’s recommended you do this early, especially on hot summer days.
There are other nearby sites to see including Saratoga National Cemetery and climb the Saratoga Monument.
Fun Fact:
The farms across the river valley along the Hudson and up along Rte. 40 have been conserved through State and Federal grants. Their conservation means that no development can happen there and the spaces are forever farmland, keeping the view from the battlefield much like the view the combatants saw in 1777. To learn more about farmland protection, check out the Agricultural Stewardship Association here.
Beyond the Battle there are Burgers and Beer
After the Battlefield there are two local breweries to check out: Bound by Fate and Ferdle Turtle Brewing.
Bound by Fate offers a selection of beers, some of which have battle-related names including their Amburgoyne, Belgian-style Pale Ale. Their downtown taproom has a deck that sits above the river and offers a relaxing experience as you catch up with friends or recount your favorite sites from the day. Burgers and other food are available as well.
A few blocks away is the Ferdle Turtle taproom. Ferdle Turtle opened its doors in June 2024 and is growing steadily and is a definite stop along the way.
A quick pick before you leave
Just up the road from the taprooms is Saratoga Apple, a great place to stop and pick your own apples if in season, or cherries (which we did in late-June), or check out their own hard cider called Scrumpy in their taproom. Local products are available including baked goods and cheeses.
