We have officially begun apple picking season in the Capital District and, like our forefathers before us, we are drawn to car rides, orchards, and stunning views of the place we call home. While we at Brew Crew Magazine are a sucker for a good u-pick orchard, we also love the adventure along the way. For that, let us offer you a fun loop through the hills of Altamont.

Let’s get the apple picking portion of the adventure out of the way first. Altamont Orchards is currently open on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weather permitting) for picking. The orchard abuts Orchard Creek Golf Course which is one of the prettiest golf courses in our area. Take advantage of the Farmers Market stuffed with fresh-baked goodies, fresh veggies, local cheeses, seasonal decorations, and more.

Allied Brewing Company (at Altamont Orchards)

It’s also super convenient that Allied Brewing shares space at Altamont Orchards. Allied features both beer and hard cider, a great view of the Heldebergs and Orchard Creek Golf Course, and has some pretty delicious food as well. There is limited seating inside the taproom but a nice outside tent for you to enjoy.

Another convenient two-fer is nearby Indian Ladder Farms. This oh-so-popular destination can be overwhelming with the options they have on hand. Yes, there is pick-your-own apples (daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weather permitting), but they also have a children’s play area, tasting room and biergarten, pizza garden, restaurant, farm store, and play host to a ton of events.

Their brewery and cidery information, including current tap lists, can be found here.
